In conventional eye makeup, look out for coal tar dyes (often listed as FD&C or D&C colors), synthetic fragrance, parabens, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM hydantoin, and PFAS, which are sometimes used in long-wear formulas to help makeup resist water and sweat. Heavy metals including lead and aluminum have also been found in some conventional eye products. Look for formulas that are fragrance-free, ophthalmologist-tested, and free from the common irritants listed above. Mineral-based pigments tend to be the gentlest option for sensitive eyes. Clean eyeshadow uses mineral oxides and mica for pigment in place of coal tar dyes, and plant-based binders instead of synthetic film formers.
