Face Serums

A face serum is a lightweight, water-based treatment that delivers a high concentration of active ingredients (like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, or peptides) deep into the skin. Its job is to target a specific concern (dullness, fine lines, dehydration, uneven tone) more precisely than a cleanser or moisturizer can. Applied between cleansing and moisturizing, it's the step where most of the visible change in a routine comes from.

Serums and moisturizers do different work. A serum delivers concentrated actives, so it's thin, absorbs fast, and drives specific results. A moisturizer hydrates the surface and protects the barrier, so it's richer, sits on top, and stays put through the day. You need both: the serum treats, the moisturizer seals and shields.

You can, but the order and combination matter. Apply water-based serums first and let each one absorb before the next, going from thinnest to thickest. Avoid stacking multiple strong actives (like retinol and vitamin C) in the same routine, since they can cancel each other out or irritate the skin; alternate morning and night instead. For most people, two well-chosen serums are the sweet spot.

The right serum for morning and night usually isn't the same one. Antioxidant serums (like vitamin C) are ideal for mornings, since they defend skin against UV and pollution through the day. Retinoids, exfoliating acids, and other actives that make skin more sun-sensitive belong at night. Hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid or peptides are safe for either time.

Most serums take four to twelve weeks of consistent daily use to show visible results, since skin cell turnover runs on a roughly 28-day cycle. Hydration and glow can show up within a week or two, but changes to dark spots, fine lines, or texture take longer to build. Give any new serum at least eight weeks before deciding it isn't working for you.
